It has to be hard to celebrate your birthday when you’re mourning the loss of your husband. That’s exactly the situation Queen Elizabeth II finds herself in this year. Prince Philip, her husband of 73 years, passed away in early April, and his funeral was the weekend before the Queen’s birthday.

The Queen actually has 2 birthdays. Her real birthday is on April 21st, but the big celebration is usually reserved for June 12th. This year, the celebration in April was especially low key. We can’t imagine she would really be in the mood to celebrate.

Despite the loss of her husband, the Queen seems to be keeping a positive attitude. She recently released a statement sharing that she is “deeply touched” by all of the heartwarming tributes that have been shared in honor of her late husband. You can read her full statement below.

I have, on the occasion of my 95thbirthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate.

While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world.

My family and I would like to thank you all for the support and kindness shown to us in recent days. We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.

ELIZABETH R.

The royal family shared The Queen’s message on Twitter, and many people took the opportunity to wish her a happy birthday and to give her words of hope in this difficult time.
