Earlier today, due to concerns about Queen Elizabeth II’s health, her family rushed to be by her side. She was staying at her home in Scotland at the time. Her daughter, Princess Anne, was the first to arrive. Shortly after, her oldest son and heir to the throne, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, arrived. Later in the day, her grandson, Prince William, and her other children arrived including Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, and Edward’s wife, Sophie. It’s reported that her grandson, Prince Harry, was also on his way to Scotland.

Now, the report comes that Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest reigning monarch, has died. She was queen for 70 years and celebrated her Platinum Jubilee earlier this year. She had been Queen since her father died when she was just 25 years old.

Queen Elizabeth II was 96 years old at the time of her death. Her oldest son, Charles, automatically becomes King Charles, and his wife, Camilla, is now Queen Consort.

Buckingham Palace released an official message from King Charles on their Twitter account. Charles explained, “The death of my beloved Mother is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.” He added, “During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by the knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

In a previous statement, Buckingham Palace announced, “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Opinion polls show that Charles is nowhere near as popular as his mother was. Royal historian Hugo Vickers believes that the Queen’s death “will be an enormous shock to everybody, much more than they realize.” He added, “I don’t know if it’s an exaggeration to think there will be some sort of almost national nervous breakdown.”

Just two days before her death, Queen Elizabeth II performed what would become her last official royal duty. She appointed Liz Truss prime minister.

In addition to the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II was also the head of state of Australia, Canada, the Bahamas, Belize, Antigua, Barbuda, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu. King Charles now becomes head of state.

Harper’s Bazaar reports that the Queen’s funeral will take place 10 days after her death. Prior to the funeral, two days after her death, her coffin will be transported to London from Scotland via royal train. If that is not possible, the coffin will be transported via plane. The late Queen will lie in state for three days at Westminster Hall in the Palace of Westminster where visitors will be able to pay their respects.
