Prince William Opens Up About When He Learned of Princess Diana’s Death

Prince William recently visited Scotland and spoke to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. During his speech, he reminisced about fond and not so fond memories of the country.

William has spent quite a bit of time in Scotland starting when he was a boy. He explained, “Scotland is incredibly important to me and will always have a special place in my heart. I’ve been coming to Scotland since I was a small boy.”

He explained that Scotland is also an important place to his family including his father, Prince Charles, and his grandmother, the Queen. He said, “As I grew up, I saw how my grandmother relishes every minute she spends here. And my father is never happier than when walking among the hills. Scotland is the source of some of my happiest memories.”

Then, William switched gears and explained that while Scotland holds many happy memories for him, it is also the place of his saddest memory. He was in Scotland when he found out his mother, Princess Diana, had died. Watch the video below to hear the prince and future king open up about this painful experience.

Although Prince William grieved his mother’s death in Scotland, he also experienced one of his fondest memories in the country. Scotland is where he met his wife, Catherine Middleton. He explained, “It was here in Scotland, 20 ago this year, that I first met Catherine. Needless to say, the town where you meet your future wife holds a very special place in your heart.” The two met while they were attending the University of St. Andrews.

Prince William emphasized that Scotland still holds a special place in his heart and his children are creating fond memories in the country as well. He said, “George, Charlotte and Louis already know how dear Scotland is to both of us, and they are starting to build their own happy memories here too. We have no doubt they will grow up sharing our love and connection to Scotland from the Highlands to the Central Belt, from the Islands to the Borders.”
