Police Officer’s Message to 18-Year-Old He Ticketed Goes Viral

Ever get pulled over and freak out? A million thoughts go through your head.

Was I going too fast? I totally wasn’t going that fast! What’s the speed limit here anyway? It couldn’t have been under what I was going. Am I going to get arrested? Oh no, the police officer is walking over…

Chances are, if you were going just a few miles over the speed limit, the cop will let you off with a warning and a talking-to about slowing down. Phew!

But if you’re going way over the speed limit—we’re talking 100 miles an hour—then you’re going to get a speeding ticket, just plain and simple. But the reason is not to ruin your day.

By going that fast, you risk potential accidents and injuries, and when you get a ticket, it’s hopefully reinforcement to ensure you keep yourself, and everyone else on the road, safe.

One police officer at the North Ridgeville Police Department in Cleveland recently pulled over a teenager going 100 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone. Of course he gave him a ticket, conveying that there’s no reason to be driving that fast or recklessly.

Instead of meekly telling the teen to slow down, the officer went to Facebook to express his feelings to the teen, as well as other teen drivers who might be making the same mistake.

“You’re welcome,” the officer began in the post that’s been shared hundreds of thousands of times. “I’d like to believe that you were minutes away from creating an unspeakable Christmas tragedy when I stopped you. If not only killing yourself, you were well on your way to killing some innocent person who was minding their own business doing nothing else wrong but being in front of you.”

Oof.

“You said you didn’t realize how fast you were going. That’s a lie,” the officer continued, adding that he noticed the teen was “visibly shaking and breaking hard.”

The officer continued the post talking about how he’s had to endure quite a bit of emotional car crashes, like pulling “dead and broken 18-year-old bodies” from vehicles and front yards.

“They thought they were invincible too. They weren’t,” the officer wrote.

As someone who deals with these kinds of tragedies a lot, the officer made it clear that when parents tell their kids to “drive safely,” they really do mean that. “Those aren’t just words. That is the very last act of them pleading with you to come home safe,” he said.

The post ended with the officer stating that he doesn’t feel bad about the ticket at all. “In fact, I’m proud of it,” he said. “Slow down. Please. You are not invincible. I promise.”

The police officer also mentioned that the 18-year-old seemed like he was a “really nice kid who made a bad decision.” Hey, we’ve all been there, right? 18 is a rough age!
