Pfizer Issues New Data About Their Booster’s Effectiveness Against the Omicron Variant

Ever since the Covid-19 omicron variant showed up in the United States, we’ve all been wondering just how effective the vaccine is against this new variant. Would the Covid vaccine offer the same level of protection against omicron as against delta?

It’s impossible to know how effective a vaccine is without any data, but now Pfizer has offered some helpful news. According to preliminary data, the company believes that the vaccine does offer some protection against omicron, but it appears that we would all be even better protected against omicron if we get a booster shot.

According to Pfizer CEO, Albert Bourla, “Three doses against omicron are almost equivalent to the two doses effectiveness we had against the … original variant.” Bourla told NBC’s “TODAY” show, “You may need to go get the third booster faster, and that’s something that the health authorities should consider very carefully and make their recommendations, but clearly having two doses compared to nothing protects you way better than having nothing.”

If you’re thinking about going to get a booster shot to increase your protection against omicron, you’ll need to make sure you’re eligible. In the United States, all adults over the age of 18 are eligible if they have had 2 doses of the Pfizer or Moderna shot at least 6 months ago. If it has been less than 6 months since the second dose, you are not yet eligible for a booster shot. Also, all adults who got the 1-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine are eligible for a booster shot 2 months after the single dose shot was administered.

Do you think a new vaccine for the omicron variant will be necessary, or do you think Pfizer’s preliminary data gives hope that a booster shot is all that’s necessary? Have you gotten a booster shot?
