When gyms closed and many people started looking for a way to exercise at home during the pandemic, the popularity of Peloton exploded. When you think of Peloton, you might first think of an exercise bike, but the fitness company makes more than bikes. The Peloton Tread, the company’s treadmill, has also been an extremely popular product.
When you purchase exercise equipment, it’s usually for health reasons. Consumers would most likely assume that the product is safe. Unfortunately, that was not the case with the Peloton treadmills.
Peloton has issued a recall for the Peloton Tread and Tread+ treadmills due to 70 reported injuries and the death of one 6-year-old child. Injuries included burns, lacerations and broken bones. The injuries and death were caused by the fact that the children were sucked under the back of the treadmill.
The Tread was sold from November 2020 until March 2021. Peloton has stopped selling the Tread+ and will issue a refund to anyone who has purchased either treadmill effected by the recall. If you own one of these treadmills, stop using it immediately.
In a statement, Peloton’s CEO John Foley, explained, “Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request that we recall the Tread+. We should have engaged more productively with them from the outset. For that, I apologize. Today’s announcement reflects our recognition that, by working closely with the CPSC, we can increase safety awareness for our Members. We believe strongly in the future of at-home connected fitness and are committed to work with the CPSC to set new industry safety standards for treadmills.”
One of the children who got injured by the Peloton Tread was the 4-year-old son of Ygal and Sarah Saadoun. The boy wasn’t even on the treadmill when he was injured. He was only playing near it when the treadmill sucked him underneath, trapping him there, which resulted in third degree burns. Watch the video below to learn more about their experience and the Peloton recall.
