The name of the Washington NFL football team the Redskins’ has been receiving criticism for quite some time—years and years. Many have seen the name as a racial slur against Native Americans, and the logo, a Native American with a feather in his hair, doesn’t help the cause.

In the past, when fans have tried to get the team’s owner, Dan Snyder, to change the name of the team, he refused. In fact, he even said that the name would “never” change back in 2013.

However, after the death of George Floyd has sparked widespread protests for racial justice across the country, Snyder retracted his previous statement and decided it was finally time to make the change.

On July 3, the team announced that they’d be undergoing a thorough review of the team’s name. “That review has begun in earnest,” the team announced in a statement 10 days later, on July 13. “As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward.”

Not only will the team be changing the name “Redskins,” they’ll also finally be retiring the logo as well.

The new name and logo are still in the works and have yet to be determined. In the statement, their approach for the new name and logo will “enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”
