We Finally Know the Name of the Newest Baby Royal Prince

Big news for you Royal Family fanatics– Duchess Kate finally gave birth to the newest prince! The little boy, who weighed in at a sturdy 8 pounds 7 ounces, was born on April 23rd at St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington.

Earlier this week, we told you about how the parents stepped out to introduce the little one to his adoring public, but there was one thing about the event that left us wanting more; the royal couple had yet to announce the tyke’s name. How rude!

If you know anything about us, then you are well aware that we’re absolutely obsessed with baby names, so we have been looking forward to learning this new prince’s name! And, as it turns out, we are not the only ones…

According to the folks with the U.K.-based Ladbroke’s Betting Agency, thousands of people had been placing official bets on what Prince William and Duchess Kate would name their littlest one. The agency says that the name Mary got the highest number of bets for a baby girl and the names Arthur and Albert tied for baby boy names.

So, why did gamblers choose these particular names, anyway?

All three names are connected to the Royal Family’s history; the most famous Mary was Mary Queen of Scots–otherwise known as “Bloody Mary!” The most notable Albert was the 19th-century Prince Albert who was the consort of Queen Victoria. Prince Arthur was known as the ‘Prince of Whales’ at the latter end of the 15th-century.

All fitting monikers, if you ask us!

But, family names aside, Prince William and Duchess Kate didn’t end up going with any of the names on the list– at least in terms of first names. We’re guessing that the folks who put down their hard-earned cash on bets with Ladbroke’s are pretty disappointed right now!

The parents actually went with a first name that no one really saw coming– in fact, it’s a name that is more commonly associated with French aristocracy.

Can you guess what it is?

Ok, another hint: the couple named their newest baby after India’s last viceroy, a man who served with distinction in World War II before being killed in a bombing by the Irish Republican Army in 1979. He was also known as the Earl Mountbatten of Burma, an uncle of Queen Elizabeth’s husband, the Duke of Edinborough.

C’mon, you still don’t know this kid’s first name??

Just kidding! Unless you are deep into the history of the Royal Family, we doubt you would have guessed this one. After all, even Brits are pretty shocked that Will and Kate chose the obscure name; just think of the move as the Royal Family version of naming a baby Bexley or Bodhi.

Now that you’ve suffered through this impromptu history lesson, it’s time for you to receive your reward. To learn this royal baby’s FULL name, be sure to watch the video below. Surprising, indeed!
