Mom Faces Jail Time for Taking Her Daughter’s Phone
If you’re a parent and your child does something wrong, you do something to discipline them right? And one of the most common forms of disciplining is to take away something the child loves for a period of time. In this day and age, that typically means their cell phones.
Jodie May of Grandville, Michigan did just that to her 15-year-old daughter after she got in trouble in school. Nothing to see here right, just a mom being a mom?
Well, not according to Jodie’s ex-husband, who filed a police report claiming that he was the owner of the phone. He told police that his ex-wife’s punishment was a crime and that she needed to be arrested.
His report was taken seriously, and Jodie was arrested facing a misdemeanor charge of larceny. That crime is punishable by up to 93 days in jail. Jodie was immediately released on $200 bond, but she was still facing jail time, simply for taking her daughter’s phone away from her.
“I was just being a mom, a concerned parent and disciplining my daughter,” Jodie explained. “I think it’s ridiculous. I can’t believe I had to be put through it, my daughter had to be put through it, my family. I’m very surprised.”
However, one detail in the case changed everything for Jodie: the ex-husband was actually not owner of the phone at all—it was the daughter’s, and therefore, his side of the case wasn’t justified.
