Meghan Markle Herself Reportedly Lodged Formal Complaint with ITV Over Piers Morgan’s Comments

Good Morning Britain” co-host Piers Morgan stormed off the set on Monday after his colleagues publicly disagreed with disparaging remarks he’d made toward Meghan Markle.

In discussing Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah, he stated he didn’t believe any of what she had said — including that she had contemplated suicide during her time as a royal.

“I wouldn’t believe her if she read me a weather report,” he said. “The fact that she’s fired up this onslaught against our royal family, I think is contemptible.”

His co-host, Susanna Reid, was outwardly appalled by his comments. The following day, meteorologist Alex Beserford stated he disagreed with the criticisms, which prompted Morgan to walk off the set.

“See you later,” he said. “Sorry. Can’t do this.”

The network, ITV, later announced Morgan would not be returning to the morning show. Ofcom, the British broadcasting regulator, revealed it had received 41,000 complaints about the episode — including from Markle herself.

According to reports, Markle wrote to ITV CEO Carolyn McCall about concerns she had over the comments, specifically how his dismissal of her statements may impact other viewers who were dealing with depression or suicidal thoughts.

The network has not confirmed the reports. However, ITV’s royal editor Chris Ship acknowledged the claims in a tweet on Wednesday.

“So … the Duchess of Sussex formally filed a complaint to @ITV on Monday,” he wrote. “It’s thought to have been sent to the broadcaster’s CEO. Meghan raised concerns about how @piersmorgan’s words affect the issue of mental health and what it might do to others contemplating suicide.”

ITV allowed Morgan to apologize for his statements, but he declined, reserving the right to his opinion. He tweeted:

On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.

Do you think Markle truly filed a formal complaint with the network? If so, do you agree with her decision? Let us know!
