McDonald’s in New Zealand Will Now Give Out Roald Dahl Books Instead of Toys in Their Happy Meals

We know (and love) McDonald’s for their greasy nuggets and fries—oh and the toy you get as a kid in your Happy Meal. A small, plastic…something or other that spins or shoots into the air…maybe it’s a Hello Kitty figurine that just sits there and does nothing at all.

The point is, the Happy Meal toy is typically a piece of you know what. With a Happy Meal priced around $5, it’s no wonder. We don’t blame McDonald’s for that; we don’t expect a tablet or anything as a side to our cheeseburger.

But now, one New Zealand McDonald’s is actually going to be upping their Happy Meal game and giving out something other than toys. And honestly, we think it’s even better than a tablet!

The New Zealand chain will be giving out abridged versions of books with their Happy Meals.

And not just any books—books by Roald Dahl, who has written a variety of whimsical award-winning books that we all know and love, from James and the Giant Peach to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda.

The excerpts of these books were made specifically for the McDonald’s Happy Meal Readers program, and the chain plans to hand out over 800,000 of them to children in the country over a period of six weeks.

Why Roald Dahl? “The Roald Dahl characters are ones that many parents will have enjoyed growing up, and it’s great to play a part in introducing them to a new generation,” explains Jo Mitchell, director of marketing at McDonald’s New Zealand.

Additionally, kids will also receive a booklet of stickers and other activities kids can complete with their books. This way, the parent can read the child the story and the kid can interact with the booklet. Plus, once the child hears the small excerpt of the story, they’re bound to want to hear the whole thing, which encourages reading.

This isn’t the first time McDonald’s tried to promote reading over toys. A McDonald’s in Sweden was the first country to utilize the Happy Meal Reader program, which launched in 2001. It has given away given away 450 million books in total.

But this year, McDonald’s wants to grow even more, and plans to be in 100 new markets before 2020.

Here are the titles that the New Zealand McDonald’s can expect to see in their Happy Meals, all by Roald Dahl:

  • Extraordinary Friends (featuring extracts from The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me and The BFG)
  • Fantastic Families (featuring extracts from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fantastic Mr Fox)
  • Magical Mischief (featuring extracts from George’s Marvellous Medicine and Matilda)
  • Secret Plans (featuring extracts from Esio Trot and The Twits)
  • Curious Characters (featuring extracts from The BFG and James and the Giant Peach)
  • Beastly Creatures (featuring extracts from The Witches and The Enormous Crocodile)
  • Incredible Inventions (featuring extracts from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and George’s Marvellous Medicine)
  • Clever Tricks (featuring extracts from The Twits and Matilda)

What do you think of McDonald’s serving up reading time instead of play time? Do you have a kid who would love getting a story as their “toy”?
