There are a lot of things to come out of quarantining the last several months. You might’ve caught up on your favorite Netflix shows. You might’ve organized your kid’s closets. You might’ve baked countless loaves of bread.
You might’ve also realized that your relationship isn’t working out after spending so much time with your significant other. Sadly, that’s been a pretty common repercussion of being at home so much. In fact, it has even affected celebrities.
Case and point: Kelly Clarkson. The singer and actress has recently announced that she and her husband of seven years, Brandon Blackstock, will be filing for divorce. The reason? Their absolutely “detrimental” time together in quarantine. In fact, even before they were forced to be together for so long, the two were having some issues.
“Kelly and Brandon had been having problems for several months and were making a conscious effort to work things out,” one source told Entertainment Tonight.
The two spent their quarantine together in Montana, hoping that time away from their home in Los Angeles would help mediate their issues, but alas, that didn’t work out so well for them, the source explained.
“They both hoped quarantining away from L.A. in Montana would help them work things out in their marriage, but instead the change in environment was actually detrimental,” said the source.
It turns out that Kelly and Brandon thrive off of time apart—like when she’s away on tour—and all of the time together really showed them their true colors.
“The constant time together seemed to make an already challenging situation worse,” the source continued, adding that Kelly’s career “definitely helped to keep her mind off things, but this recent downtime gave her the time she needed to think about her life and her marriage.”
Kelly began the process for divorce a few weeks back, something she and Brandon have both known was inevitable but have been putting off until recently. Kelly “knew she just needed to follow her heart and finally realized divorce was her only option,” said the source.
Just because they know divorce is the right decision, it doesn’t mean it was easy. “They are both heartbroken,” said the source.
As far as moving forward, Kelly and Brandon have agreed to put their two kids first. “Their focus is on co-parenting and moving forward, as this is the last place they ever thought they would be,” said the source. “They both understand divorce is never easy for children, but Kelly and Brandon are great parents. It’ll just take time.”
