Hobbit Teahouse is a Fantasy Come True

Themed homes have surged in popularity throughout the years, often inspired by fantasy stories. The ability to construct a house straight out of a fairy tale or fantasy novel has been made real.

Really real. One such example is a hobbit-style house. Built into trees, hillsides, or some off-the-grid location, these tiny homes are popping up all over the world. And people sometimes live in them! Couple Danica and Jože Kolarič of Slovenia built their hobbit haven in the middle of a hill.

Called a teahouse by the family, the unique space is made from recycled materials and sits in a rural countryside. Most of the wood was sourced from dilapidated farmhouses and buildings in the area, and was used for flooring and walls.

After doing some digging into the hill, a foundation was laid for the place and it was built from the ground up. The roof was originally covered in turf so that it could blend into the grass around it. Whatever your vantage point, you won’t be able to tell.

A peek inside reveals the house boasts a rustic charm, and a concrete retaining wall in the back that provides support for the entire structure. On that same wall is a wood-burning fireplace that provides warmth throughout the one-level cottage. Set in front of the beautiful stone and brick fireplace are seats for cozying up.

Along the wood-paneled walls you’ll find attached cushioned seating and shelving. The teahouse is furnished with bureaus and a long dining table, both made of wood. Beams line the ceilings and are scattered throughout the house as supportive pillars.

Outside, the roof of the hobbit house is completely concealed, except for one feature. A metal chimney pokes out of the roof and through the grassy knoll. The exterior, made from old pieces of timber fits nicely below – and above – ground.

Elsewhere on the property are organic herb and flower gardens, a gazebo, and beehives. Danica, an herbalist, makes and serves tea to family, friends, and visitors. She also prepares some of her herbal remedies with plants that grow on the property. Jože, a beekeeper, shows visitors around the apiary and gives demos on honey extraction.

People who pass through can sip on a cup of herbal tea with a touch of honey while sitting inside the hobbit hovel or on the grounds. Windows in the front of the house allow the sun to shine a bit of its light into the small teahouse, warming up the tiny space.

Nestled in this natural landscape, the house blends right in with its surroundings. If any of you ever wanted a sweet escape and a nice spot of tea, this is an ideal place. Bilbo and Frodo would feel comfortable!

Though this house was inspired by Tolkien’s tale, you don’t have to be a hobbit’s height to walk through its ornate doors. All you need to do is take a trip to Slovenia!

What do you think of this fantastical house? If you had a choice, what story would design a themed home around?
