When a real-life story sounds like a made-up romance, you know it’s going to be a good one. This is probably one of our favorite love stories we’ve ever heard.

It was back in 1967 when Howard Foster and Myra Clark fell in love. They were only in high school, but they knew how they felt. But while they’d love to say no one could tell them differently, unfortunately back then, it wasn’t okay for a black man and white woman to be together.

Though Howard cared for Myra deeply, he knew he had to break up with Myra so that racism wouldn’t interfere with their relationship. It was one of the hardest, most regretful decisions he’s ever had to make, but it had to be done.

“I remember just sitting in my car and crying, because it was not an easy decision. I really did love her,” said Howard.

Though the two were both heart broken that they couldn’t be together, they still managed to wish each other well. It was an amicable break-up—one that both parties understood and respected.

As Howard and Myra walked away on this fateful day, Myra recalls both of them turning around and waving each other at the same time (seriously, is this out of a movie or what?).

“I really think that wave was, I’ll see you later,” she said.

And so Howard and Myra went on with their lives. They grew up, went to college, carried on with work. And for over four decades, the two didn’t talk or see each other.

Oh, but they thought of each other.

In fact, Myra thought about Howard so much that she couldn’t find it in herself to get commit herself to another man. She never got married and remained single into her 40s because her heart was somewhere else.

Howard on the other hand did marry—but it was to the wrong person. They eventually divorced (we can’t imagine why!) and Howard found himself thinking of Myra once again.

But then something amazing happened. In 2014, a mutual friend realized that he knew both parties, and found a way to reconnect the two love birds.

When Howard and Myra finally got to reconnect again, it was like pure magic. They instantly felt the same feelings they did so many years ago. But this time, they wouldn’t let racism win.

“For me, the fact that I was sitting there holding her hands is something that I thought would never happen,” said Howard. “And I was not letting her go.”

And he stayed true to that—he didn’t let go. On August 1, 2015, Howard and Myra finally made it officially and said “I do” to each other. They’ve been married ever since, and are so, so happy together.
