Sometimes when we’re feeling down there’s nothing like a good meme to cheer us up. It’s crazy how it works that sometimes the right text with the right picture can bring a smile to our faces no matter what circumstances we’re facing that day.

When it comes to memes, Grumpy Cat is hard to beat. The sarcasm. The wit. The signature grumpy expression that no other cat can pull off. Grumpy Cat has definitely been a social media hit for a long time.

It all started back in 2012 when Grumpy Cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, had her picture posted on the r/pics sub-Reddit. Grumpy Cat’s owner, Tabatha, let her brother, Bryan, post the picture. People were saying that the grumpy expression was photoshopped, so they decided to post a couple videos on YouTube to prove that her expression is the real deal.

While the original post was definitely not photoshopped, many Reddit users posted their own photoshopped versions of this original photo, and in just 48 hours, the photo’s Imgur page had well over a million views. Grumpy Cat was an instant hit.

Grumpy Cat was officially a celebrity when people lined up for hours to get their picture taken with her at the South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas.

Grumpy Cat became so famous that she not only had millions of followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, but she also had her image on everything from perfume bottles to Skechers shoes. She was even the official “spokescat” for Friskies.

Proving that you really can make the best out of a less than ideal situation, Grumpy Cat used her feline dwarfism to her advantage. It was the dwarfism that accounted for her small size and her signature grumpy expression, but she didn’t let it get her down. She lived a very happy live making others smile up until the very end.

On Tuesday, May, 14th, 2019, Grumpy Cat passed away. Her owners, Tabatha, Bryan and Chrystal, posted the following announcement on Instagram to share the cat news with her millions of fans.

We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat.

Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome. She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.

Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world — even when times were tough.

Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.

Grumpy Cat was only 7 years old. She will definitely be missed, but we agree that her spirit will live on. Rest in peace, Grumpy Cat.
