We don’t foresee that talk of how Game of Thrones ended will let up anytime soon, but there is a chance that fans will get to see their favorite characters on a different trajectory.
As you may know, the TV show outpaced the events of two unfinished books, giving showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff creative license with how the story was told on screen. George R.R. Martin, author of the now-iconic series, wrote a post on his blog about how things are supposed to go down in the unpublished books.
Martin worked with the HBO team to give them basic tidbits about the new novels for some direction. In the blog post, he answered fans’ ultimate question: will it end the same way? Of course, his answer was not so direct.
“How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different?
Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes.
I am working in a very different medium than David and Dan, never forget. They had six hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done… and if more pages and chapters and scenes are needed, I’ll add them. There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books…
Book or show, which will be the “real” ending? It’s a silly question. How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have?”
70-year-old Martin ended his post by saying everyone can read it in the books and then argue on the internet about it. But he is extremely thankful to all who have taken this ride with Game of Thrones, including fans, cast, crew, and others behind the scenes.
Those of you who are waiting for a redemptive ending of some sort will have two books to look forward to, but until then, accept Bran as king. Or not.
Are you a fan of the book series who is looking forward to the new releases? Do you believe the books will be drastically different?
