It’s Official — People Are Wearing Fanny Packs Again
Do you ever look back at old photos of your parents and exclaim, “I can’t believe you used to wear that!”
From bell-bottoms to thick-rimmed glasses and chokers, there’s been a lot of things we never thought would come back into style…come back into style. And now there’s one more thing to add to the list.
Yes, that pouch with the strap that you wear around you waist! Fanny packs used to just be a hideous thing that people wore in the ‘80s, whether it was to hold their change or Smackers lip gloss. People also associated these packs with tourists carrying all their film.
It definitely wasn’t something anyone ever thought would ever made a comeback. Until now.
“Belt bags, aka fanny packs, aren’t just for awkward tourists or your grandparents anymore,” says fashion stylist Kim Dunn. “You don’t have to embrace the trend, but you will have to wait it out…possibly for a very long time.”
It’s official, people are wearing fanny packs again, and honestly? We’re not even that mad about it. They’re actually a really functional accessory! No more squeezing gum in your pockets, no more digging for your phone in your purse. Plus, a fanny pack allows you to carry around all the necessities, without the weight of a bag on your shoulder. They’re totally useful!
Not only are the people wearing the fannies benefiting, but so is the accessories industry. Sales of fashion accessories increased 4 percent in the first 10 months of the year, according to market research firm NPD Group, and the fanny pack category make up almost a quarter of the industry’s growth!
The fanny packs are really just another way to dress up an outfit. We might think of tacky grunge patterns when we think of fanny packs, but in this day and age, they’re much more fashion forward.
You can also find more reasonably priced fanny packs on other sites like Amazon.
This black one by ZORFIN is one of our favorites!
“If styled appropriately, you can even wear a fanny pack to the office or for a night out,” says fashion expert Dawn Del Russo. “At the office, I would choose a more sleek, streamlined style in simple leather; for night, go with embellishment or a chain belt.”
That’s just kind of what happens in the world—history repeats itself, especially when it comes to the clothes we wear.
