Per the Mayo Clinic, shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash, usually appearing as a stripe of blisters on one side of the body, often around the torso. It’s caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox — which can remain in the body and reactivate years later.
While shingles isn’t typically life-threatening, it can be very painful. Common symptoms include pain, burning or tingling, sensitivity to touch, a red rash, fluid-filled blisters, and itching. Some people may also experience fever, headache, fatigue, and light sensitivity.
Pain is often the first symptom and can sometimes be mistaken for issues involving internal organs. In some cases, people may feel pain without developing a rash.
The most common complication is postherpetic neuralgia, a condition where pain continues long after the rash clears. Vaccination can help reduce the risk, and early treatment may shorten the illness and lessen complications.
