“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is a classic Disney animated movie from 1937. It was also the very first full length animated film, and the film that featured Disney’s very first princess.

Although “Snow White” is historic and was groundbreaking for its time, is it appropriate to remake the film today? Disney thinks yes, but Peter Dinklage thinks no.

Dinklage recently called out Disney for being hypocritical. On Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, Dinklage explained, “There’s a lot of hypocrisy going on. Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. But you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that f***ing backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together.”

Perhaps Disney originally thought it was good enough to be progressive by casting Latina actress and “West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler in the movie’s title role, but Dinklage wanted to be loud and clear that the dwarfs were a big issue.

Disney has not ignored Dinklage. Instead, they have already responded to his concerns. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson from Disney explained, “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

Disney’s live action remake of “Snow White” has already been in development for three years. According to THR, in early stages of development, the dwarf characters were imagined as animated characters instead of casting people with dwarfism or another alternative.

Previously, Zegler and Gal Gadot, who has been cast to play the Evil Queen, have both stated that the “Snow White” story told in the live action film will be quite a bit different than the original story. We don’t know if that includes the story of the dwarfs, but it certainly sounds like it will now. Perhaps Disney do more than simply respond to Dinklage’s comments and consider including him in the conversation since he is part of the dwarfism community Disney says it will be consulting.
