Iconic singer Cyndi Lauper’s son, Declyn “Dex” Lauper, has found himself in a bit of trouble. The 24-year-old hip hop singer who also goes by the name Declyn Thornton, after his father, David Thornton, was arrested back in July for being caught with a stolen car.

The car in question was a 2014 Mercedes Benz whose license plates were from Pennsylvania and matched a Chrysler. The Mercedes had been stolen from the Bronx back in 2020.

Dex was sitting in the stolen car, which was double parked, after attending a memorial service for a 14-year-old rapper who was fatally stabbed in the subway. The rapper was named Ethan Reyes, but he went by the stage name Notti Osama. According to the police, the teen was fighting with a 15-year-old boy at the 137th Street/City College subway station on July 9 when he was stabbed. The memorial service was held on July 17th, and Dex was arrested around 1:40am.

Dex was arrested for unlawful possession of stolen property in the fifth degree and unauthorized use of a vehicle in the third degree. He was given a desk-appearance ticket.

Fast forward to August 10, and Dex appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court. According to the prosecutors, when the police approached Dex in the stolen car, he told them, “You probably know who I am.” He said, “I’m an artist, you probably know who I am. My mother’s Cyndi Lauper. It’s not my car, someone told me to sit in it. My mother is Cyndi Lauper.”

Dex didn’t speak during his appearance in court before Judge Vanessa Lewis. He was joined in court by his girlfriend and his father. Judge Lewis released him on his own recognizance.

He didn’t comment to reporters. Instead, he simply said, “No words, brother, speak to my attorney.”
