It’s safe to say that most avid DIYers have at least some experience with the super versatile material that is Chalk Paint. Whether you’ve slathered it on a table for a shabby chic-inspired finish or you’ve used it to spruce up the look of your bathroom floor, the paint simply looks great anywhere!

Take the kitchen, for instance. Coating practically every surface of this room with Chalk Paint may seem a bit unconventional—especially considering it’s most widely used on small embellishments—but the unique texture of the paint, as well as its non-toxic properties, actually makes it a great choice for the room.

In a post for The Kitchn, one DIYer by the name of Jessica Davis used the special paint to act as a sort of colorful centerpiece for her on-the-cheap kitchen remodel. It all started when the blogger realized she wouldn’t be able to pay for new cabinets or flooring.

Jessica says that she decided on Chalk Paint after a friend and upcycled vintage décor shop owner recommended it to her. At first, Jessica was apprehensive about using the paint, as she was dubious about its versatility, but after completing some tests, she was convinced.

Jessica writes:

…because hiring a pro wasn’t an option, I did a little more research and did a test on one of my cabinet doors. It was pretty easy! I then got my feet wet painting a hall console to make sure I understood the process and to test out the wear and tear. After seeing the results, I decided to take the plunge and go for the kitchen. I was so happy with the results, I even painted and stenciled my kitchen floor with Chalk Paint!

Yep, you read that right—Jessica actually managed to successfully use the paint on the FLOORS as well as the cabinets.

Who knew that a stencil and some black and white Chalk Paint could provide such a cool design element? Sometimes taking risks really does pay off!

Tips for creating your own Chalk Paint design masterpiece

Now, before you dive right into your Chalk Paint kitchen makeover, there are a few things you need to know about the material.

First things first: if you cruise the aisles of your home improvement store, you will quickly realize that Chalk Paint is actually a brand of paint by Annie Sloan. Of course, other companies have their own formulations that work just as well, but they are usually referred to as “paint with chalk finishes”.

The important thing to note here is that they all pretty much do the same thing. Potato-potato.

When it comes to application, it’s important to work quickly, as the formula is quite fast-drying. This means that you should always give yourself the time you need to knock out an entire layer. The good news is, because Chalk Paint dries very quickly, you’ll be able to slather on more layers soon after.

From there, ALWAYS make sure that you use a wax sealant that is specifically made for either the real Chalk Paint or the impostor stuff. This step is key because it ensures that your new finishes will be both water and chip-resistant.

We don’t know about you, but we think that end result is simply to die for! Those matte finishes add a real vintage quality to the room. Score one for Chalk Paint!
