Fans of actress Cameron Diaz may feel a little confused right now if they recently heard she’s retired from acting. Various sources are saying that she has decided to step out of the spotlight and the movie industry.

The chatter first hit the media when one of her close friends – fellow actress Selma Blair – said in an interview at a pre-Oscars party that Diaz was “done”. Blair made the comment when speaking about the pair starring in the 2002 movie, The Sweetest Thing:

“I had lunch with Cameron the other day. We were reminiscing about the film. I would have liked to do a sequel but Cameron’s retired from acting. She’s like ‘I’m done.’”

She continued:

“I mean, she doesn’t need to make any more films. She has a pretty great life, I don’t know what it would take to bring her back.”

Diaz has had a pretty great run in her career, with her debut in The Mask and a slew of roles after that. Since then, she’s been featured in films such as Charlie’s Angels, There’s Something About Mary, and all of the hit Shrek movies as the voice of Princess Fiona.

Her last film appearance was in the 2014 remake of Annie, where she played the villain Miss Hannigan. The 45-year-old also found love with Benji Madden of the band Good Charlotte, whom she married in 2015.

So much has been going on in Diaz’s life that perhaps she is just on a break. In 2013, she published her first wellness-related book, and followed that one up in 2016 with a book about longevity. And in 2017 at Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop Wellness event, she opened up about her retreat from Hollywood.

Feeling overwhelmed from all the travel involved, she wanted to focus more on time for herself:

“I just went, ‘I can’t really say who I am to myself.’ Which is a hard thing to face up to. I felt the need to make myself whole.”

We can’t blame her for that! Though she hasn’t directly spoken up about a full retirement, Diaz’s friend Selma Blair has backpedaled on her former statement about the actress being done. Stating it was a joke, Blair tweeted that her former co-star is not retiring from the industry but that she herself is retiring from being Diaz’s spokesperson.

For now, it sounds like a case of is-she or isn’t-she, and only Cameron Diaz will be able to tell people in her own time, in her own way if she’s stepping away from acting for good. Understandably, she’s taking a break from the demands of the entertainment world. In love and out of the limelight, it seems like she’s doing just fine.
