How to Smooth Out Cakey Foundation

It’s no secret that makeup is used to disguise skin struggles like acne or large pores. But what if you want to keep what’s being hidden a secret? Using the right technique and products, you can!

Does your foundation make you think about cakey layers by the pound? Yeah. It’s known to highlight flaws by clinging to them. Foundation can be tricky when trying to achieve a smooth look, but beauty vlogger Stephanie Lange shares some tips on how to apply it without cakes or flakes.

If you have acne, large pores, oily or dry spots, you’re not alone. Stephanie candidly opens up about her own skin and what she does to combat its bumpy texture. For her, bumps underneath and on top of her skin are only part of the challenge. She’s got rosacea, acne, combination skin, and visible pores.

To start, she suggests removing facial hair, paying special attention to the mouth region, where foundation can call attention to it. You can use a tool like Stephanie’s to zap it or another method like a depilatory. Doing this before cleansing your face will ensure loose hairs get washed away afterwards.

Fast forward to her foundation application technique. After moisturizing her skin, Stephanie dabs on her liquid foundation using a blender sponge. She notes that the foundation she prefers is matte, which is good for her oily, acne-prone skin. While some of you might be used to working your foundation in with your fingers, for problem skin, this can actually make it worse.

Bacteria and dirt can be spread through the hands. Using a blender sponge will not only avoid that, but helps the foundation to flatten out flaws instead of making them more pronounced. Stephanie then follows up the sponging with a bit of brush work on her pores. You’ll notice in the video that she brushes the foundation into her pores with swirling strokes.

Before hitting the last step, check your skin to make sure your complexion looks even. A light layer of foundation should look natural when buffed into the skin. Be careful to go beyond the jaw, or else you could end up making it obvious you’re wearing makeup!

Push play below to learn step-by-step how Stephanie transforms her skin and gives it a smooth finish. She hails several go-to products that are the right fit for her skin, and choosing a foundation that won’t put a spotlight on blemishes is key. Look for one that nourishes your skin type and shade. If necessary, you can even blend two shades together.

And don’t forget to moisturize like Stephanie. Regardless of whether you have dry or oily skin, moisture will help your foundation to blend in better. Banish the bumpy texture and bring in the “I woke up like this” fierceness without layers and layers of caked on makeup.
