If You’re Wondering What Devotion Looks Like, It’s This 93-Year-Old Man Who Visits His Wife’s Grave Every Day

If you don’t think true love exists, you’re going to start believing once you read this heartwarming and bittersweet story. Warning! Get the tissues ready!

When 93-year-old Ted Richardson lost his wife Florence in 2013, he truly didn’t think he could go on without her. They met when he was just 16 and she was 14.

“I was standing in the hall. The classes were changing and I saw a beautiful girl,” Ted said. “I went home and told my dad that night I saw the girl I was going to marry.”

He wasn’t lying. They went on to get married, move to Pennsylvania, and have their son. The only time they were ever separated is when Ted went to fight in World War II. But he made sure to take a picture of his wife with him and carry it around with him always.

“She was beautiful. I didn’t mind looking at her all the time,” he said.

While Ted can’t physically look at his wife in person anymore, he can do the next best thing, which is visit her grave as often as he can—which just so happens to be six times each week.

This isn’t just a trip across the street. Ted has to take three separate buses from his apartment in Waikiki to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, where Florence’s grave is.

Besides simply saying hello to his wife, Ted also tends to her grave, making sure that the grass and bushes surrounding it are all in tip top condition. She always took care of him and now he wants to repay the favor, he explained.

“I always tell her when I go up there, ‘Payback time,'” Ted said.

Ted usually tries to get to the cemetery first thing in the morning, and is typically the first one to arrive every day, and sometimes even has to wait for the gates to open at 6:30 a.m.

The security staff knows him well there, and each day, offers to drive him up a hill so he can easily get to Florence.

Ted and Florence had an extremely loving relationship. Most couples, especially ones who were married as long as these two, have plenty of arguments throughout their lives, but not Ted and Florence.

“For 72 years she lost her temper only once—in 72 years! And it was my fault,” Ted said.

Our hearts are literally melting, but there’s even more. Every time Ted visits Florence’s grave, he brings her flowers, and he’s already arranged for his church to bring Florence flowers after he dies.

Okay, that’s it, we’re losing it over here.

To date, Ted has visited Florence over 1,300 times and has no plans to stop unless he’s physically unable to.
