Instead of pandemic buying a new puzzle or video game system, give your home that thorough cleaning it really needs. Maybe you were already planning on doing this since germs are on our minds now than ever before.

As you prepare to start your marathon cleaning project, make sure you clean everything. There are probably a few super dirty items that you never even realized you were supposed to clean, and these high-touch items should actually be cleaned on a regular basis.

We’re here to help. Scroll down to discover 14 items in your home that you need to clean right away, and learn how easy it is to keep them clean.

  1. Your Keys

You take them everywhere you go, and you probably never even realized you were supposed to clean them. Who knows what germs they’ve collected! All you need is a disinfecting wipe to get them clean. A toothpick comes in handy to clean the grooves.

  2. Wallet

You touch it every time you go to a store, and it’s probably covered in germs. Thankfully, a wallet is easy to clean. Take everything out of it. Then hand wash it by dipping a soft cloth in a soapy solution and wiping down every part of the wallet. Next, rinse your wallet in warm water and let it air dry.

  3. Credit Cards

While you’re waiting for your wallet to dry, you might as well clean your credit cards. These pieces of plastic can hide germs in the number and letter grooves. Grab a disinfecting wipe, and give them a thorough wipe down. Be sure to let them dry before putting them back in your wallet.

  4. Cell Phone

There probably isn’t anything that’s more high-touch than your cell phone. Yet, you probably don’t think about it when it comes to cleaning. When was the last time you touched your phone before and after washing your hands. Yeah. Kind of negates washing your hands doesn’t it? Thankfully, it’s easy to clean. Turn it off, take off the case and grab a microfiber cloth. Make a solution of 60% water to 40% rubbing alcohol, dip the cloth in the solution, and wipe off your phone and case. While you’re at it, use this solution to wipe off your laptop and/or keyboard and mouse. Now that you realize how germy your phone can get, refrain from setting it down in public places, especially restrooms.

  5. Remote Control

Everyone in your home touches it, but chances are nobody cleans it. Thankfully, it’s not hard to clean. Remove the batteries but replace the battery cover before you begin. Use a disinfecting wipe to thoroughly clean every area of the remote. Make sure you don’t miss the little areas around the buttons! If there’s built-up grime that’s hard to get out, a toothpick works wonders. Wait for the remote to dry before you replace the batteries.

  6. Doorknobs

This includes indoor and outdoor doorknobs. Just like the remote, everyone in your home touches them, but they’ve probably never been cleaned. All you need is a disinfectant wipe. While you’re at it, go ahead and wipe off knobs on cabinets, drawers and doors on furniture like desks and dressers.

  7. Light Switches

Every single light switch in your house probably needs to be cleaned right now. A dry microfiber cloth is actually all you need to remove bacteria from light switches. Just be sure you don’t reuse the same area of the cloth, or you’ll pass germs from one light switch to another.

  8. Trash Cans

You throw things away in trash cans, but do you ever clean them? It’s kind of gross when you think about it, isn’t it? First, clean the entire trash can with soapy water. Then, after the trash can is dry, use a spray to disinfect it. Be sure you wait for the spray to dry before using the trash can or adding a trash bag.

  9. Toys

Clean stuffed toys by putting them in a pillowcase and then putting the pillowcase in the washer and dryer on gentle cycle. Clean plastic toys by soaking them in a mixture of 1/2 cup bleach and 1 gallon of water. Inspect bath toys for mold. Those little bath squirters can hide mold on the inside. Throw them away if/when this happens.

  10. Backpacks

Your kids probably toss them on the ground, and then they might even set them on the dining room table. Gross! Check to see if the backpack is machine washable. If it is, problem solved. If not, hand wash with a cloth or brush dipped in soapy water. Be sure to clean zippers, straps and every pocket. Rinse the backpack off and allow it to air dry.

  11. Reusable Grocery Bags

They go from the cart at the grocery store to your trunk to your kitchen. Yes, they are carrying loads of germs. Thankfully, they are easy to clean. Cloth bags can be thrown in the washer and dryer on delicate. Wipe plastic bags off with disinfecting wipes.

  12. Purses

Your purse goes with you to the store, the bathroom, work, your friend’s house, your bedroom – literally everywhere you go. The inside might be filled with crumbs. The outside definitely has germs lurking all over it. Please, never set it on the ground if you can help it! To clean a leather purse, wipe it down thoroughly with a disinfecting wipe. To clean a fabric purse, use a cloth dipped in soapy water to wipe it off. Once dry, spray it with a sanitizing spray.

  13. Toothbrush

You could just throw your toothbrush away and get a new one, but it’s really not that hard to clean. Just soak it in hydrogen peroxide for a few minutes and rinse it off.

  14. Toothbrush Holder

Now that your toothbrush is clean, you don’t want to set it back inside something that’s filled with germs. Wash it in warm soapy water. If it has a removable top, remove it so you can clean every part thoroughly. Allow it to dry completely before putting it back together.

Be sure to follow the directions on your cleaning products to make sure you are using them properly. For example, disinfecting wipes aren’t very effective if you don’t follow the directions.
