While not everyone has siblings, those of us who have at least one brother or sister are usually generally thankful that they exist. There’s truly something special about the bond between siblings, and though kids may fight and older siblings might not see eye to eye, the bond is still there.
What is interesting about siblings is how birth order has been proven to have an impact on personality traits. Is it because parents pay more attention to the baby in the family? Is it because the older children have to take on more responsibility (or simply that they like bossing around their younger siblings)? Yes. Maybe. No.
A study among British families where there were at least 2 children in the household has brought to light some interesting differences between the oldest and the youngest siblings.
The study, conducted by YouGov, involved asking oldest siblings a series of questions to find out how they self-identified on different personality traits compared to their youngest sibling, and asking the youngest siblings the same questions. The results are eye-opening.
It’s easy to think that the oldest sibling in the family would be the funniest one. After all, he or she has a built-in audience to make laugh. However, according to the survey, this is not the case. Youngest siblings self-identified as more funny.
Not only that, youngest siblings also self-identified as more easy going, more relaxed and more favored by their parents. Perhaps it’s the perceived parental favoritism that makes the youngest siblings feel more easy going and more relaxed which also probably contributes to their heightened sense of humor.
On the flip side, oldest siblings self-identified as more responsible, more organized, more successful, more self-confident, more family-oriented and more able to prioritize their own life. No wonder younger siblings might hear parents say things like “Why can’t you be more like your older brother?” when a report card doesn’t measure up. The answer might be as simple as birth order.
So, if you’re considering a career as a stand-up comedian, you might want to think again if you’re the oldest sibling in the family. If you’re considering a career as an accountant, and you’re the youngest sibling, you might want to think twice there too.
Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule. Do you feel like the above descriptions of oldest sibling and youngest sibling are true for your family? What’s your birth order?
