If you can believe it, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have never had a royal portrait created of them—until now. On June 23, the work of art was released, which was painted by British artist Jamie Coreth.

The portrait was “commissioned in 2021 by the Cambridgeshire Royal Portrait Fund, held by the Cambridge Community Foundation, as a gift to Cambridgeshire,” Kensington Palace said in a statement.

“With this brief in mind, the artist worked to incorporate the City of Cambridge into the portrait by painting the background with the tones and colours of many of the historical stone buildings that are synonymous with the city,” the palace said. “The portrait also includes the use of a hexagonal architectural motif which can be seen on buildings across Cambridge.”

In the portrait, Kate Middleton is wearing a gorgeous dark green dress with shoes that match just perfectly. She’s looking over to the right, with her hair and makeup done just perfectly. William is right beside her wearing a suit and tie and a perfectly folded handkerchief in his pocket. He has his hand in his pocket in a dapper pose, also looking off to the right.

If you want to see the portrait in person, it will be on display for public viewing at the University of Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum for the next three years. After that, fans can view the portrait in other areas around Cambridgeshire. It’ll be loaned to the National Portrait Gallery next year as a celebration of the gallery’s reopening.

“It has been the most extraordinary privilege of my life to be chosen to paint this picture,” Coreth said in a statement. “I wanted to show Their Royal Highnesses in a manner where they appeared both relaxed and approachable, as well as elegant and dignified. Coreth is a graduate of the Florence Academy of Art. He’s also a recipient of the Young Artist Award in 2016 and Visitors’ Choice in 2020 among many other achievements.

“As it is the first portrait to depict them together, and specifically during their time as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, I wanted the image to evoke a feeling of balance between their public and private lives,” he said. “The piece was commissioned as a gift for the people of Cambridgeshire, and I hope they will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed creating it.”
