Celebrities are known for making intriguing splashes, but one of our favorite things about them is their tendency of giving their offspring incredibly bizarre names. Now, we’re not here to judge anyone’s baby name choices, but some of them are just plain weird–we’re looking at you, Jason Lee. (He and his wife, Beth Riesgraf, named their baby son Pilot Inspektor!)
That said, sometimes celebs really surprise us! For every Apple, Blue Ivy, and Usher (that’s singer Usher’s son, FYI), there is also a famous kiddo with a pretty “normal” name. One of the newest examples of this is none other than Kate Upton and Justin Verlander’s baby girl, Genevieve. Sure, it might be slightly old-fashioned, or vintage, as they like to say nowadays, but it’s also a moniker that’s classic and very, very elegant.

Earlier this month, Upton posted the first image of her first-born to her Instagram page, along with this simple caption:
Predictably, the social media peanut gallery had a lot to say about the Houston Astros pitcher and the supermodel’s choice in baby names, but, overall, fans seemed to dig the traditional choice. One user even showed support with this comment: “PERFECT….her name… #everything.”
#everything, indeed!
At the moment, we still don’t know why or how the famous couple landed on Genevieve, but we do have some background on the classic name.
According to Nameberry, Genevieve has its roots in France, but it is also one that has been reappropriated for the English language. It’s has the strong meaning of “tribe woman” and is currently sitting at the 184th spot of the most popular baby names in America.
Though it might not be a super common name, the baby name website does report that a whopping 79% of its users prefer Genevieve to its more common variation, Jennifer. It’s also a name that the baby will share with various famous folks before her, most notably, Saint Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris.
Very interesting stuff, huh? While we admit that it’s not a name that we hear often, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t love it. Genevieve is traditional, sure, but it also comes equipped with a variety of sounds that allow for nicknames aplenty, like G, Genna, Genie, Eve, Evie, Gigi, Ginny, Viv–the possibilities are endless. Gotta love a classic baby name that yields so many fun, trendy variations!
