In case you haven’t been paying attention to the British royal family, let us bring you up to speed. In March 2020, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle announced that they were going to step down as senior members of the royal family. They ended up settling in California and securing several deals that should more than allow them to pay for whatever they want without help from the royal family.
Originally, the Queen, Harry’s grandmother, said that there would be a review of the arrangement after a year. It has been slightly less than a year, but last week, the arrangement became official. Harry and Meghan will not be returning to their position as senior royals. They are free to live their lives as they choose.
It’s suspected that the reason Harry and Meghan wanted the deal to become official slightly early is that they agreed to a televised interview with Oprah Winfrey that is set to air on March 7th on CBS.
What does the Queen have to say about all this? In a statement, she explained that Meghan and Harry simply don’t have time to continue with royal duties since they have so many other responsibilities now. That sounds nice, but we can’t help but wonder if she’s at all worried about what they’ll say during the interview with Oprah.
The Queen was set to address the nation via a pre-recorded message for Commonwealth Day. Originally her message would’ve been broadcast after the Oprah interview aired, but she has decided to have it broadcast 24-hours earlier than originally scheduled. Now, it will air before the Oprah interview. An exact time is yet to be announced, but it will definitely be before the Oprah interview airs on March 7th.
What the Queen will say is also yet to be determined, but according to the Daily Star, she was “blindsided” about Harry and Meghan’s decision to agree to a tell-all interview with Oprah. She must have something important to say before anyone hears their interview.
Other members of the royal family will also be part of the special broadcast including Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Charles and Camilla. They will be talking about the importance of the British Commonwealth.
Last year, Harry and Meghan chose to announce that they were stepping down from royal life during the Commonwealth Service. The service was canceled this year due to COVID-19 and will be replaced by the broadcast on BBC One instead.
What do you think the Queen will say during the broadcast? Do you think the Queen is worried about the Oprah interview? What do you think Meghan and Harry will reveal to Oprah that the Queen is so worried about?
