Think you know everything about the British royal family? Think again. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s tell all interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this year may have revealed some bombshells about the family, but they left out a lot of information, like positive attributes and talents. For example, not many people knew until recently that Kate Middleton can play the piano, like, really well.
It turns out that Kate has turned to piano playing as a source of comfort during the pandemic and resulting lockdowns. A royal source told PEOPLE, “Music was very important to the Duchess during the lockdowns.” The source added, “She also recognizes the powerful way in which music brings people together — especially during difficult times.”
Kate started taking piano lessons when she was a child back in the 1990s. She took lesson from around the age of 10 to around the age of 13. Her piano instructor, Daniel Nicholls, recalls, “She was absolutely lovely, a really delightful person to teach the piano.”
Nicholls thought Kate was talented when it came to playing the piano, but he never thought she would be good enough to be a concert pianist. When he taught her, she reached grade 3. The highest grade possible is grade 8.
Kate decided to share her piano playing skills with the world on December 8 at a Christmas carol concert. When Scottish singer Tom Walker performed his song “For Those Who Can’t Be Here,” the Duchess accompanied him on piano. This is the very first time she has ever played the piano for a public performance.

Besides playing the piano, Kate also has quiet a few other not too often talked about skills. When it comes to music, she can also play the flute and has taken singing lessons. As far as sports, she is quite good at tennis. When it comes to the arts, she enjoys photography and is skilled at drawing.
