At this point in the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s expected to wear masks in public. In fact, most stores require their customers to wear some kind of face-covering in order to limit the spread of germs. If you come in without a mask, you’ll be asked to put one on or leave.
However, there’s always going to be that person who refuses to follow policy and throw a fit. Some people call these people “Karen”s—you know, modern-day slang for an entitled or demanding person; someone who plays up her own privilege, usually at the expense of others.
Meet the “Karen” who made a scene at Fiesta Market, a grocery store in Texas. She came in without a mask, and when she was asked to put one on, all hell broke loose. You’d think someone called her an offensive remark, but no. All she was told was to put on a mask!
There has been a few of these in the last few months. For example, this woman who claimed to have a breathing problem in Trader Joe’s and refused to put on a mask, or the woman who tried to get a Starbucks employee fired after he asked her to wear a mask (and failed miserably).
Now, this new woman—the Karen, if you will—is seen in a video at the checkout line throwing her groceries out of the cart onto the ground, one by one, screaming and causing a scene. The ironic part about it all is that she’s actually holding a mask in her hand, but refusing to put it on!
Perhaps she is not aware that we’re in the middle of a global pandemic? Or maybe she’s just a Karen.
