Ever go to the beach, try to take some nice photos of the waves, and the consequently drop your phone in the water? Maybe you fished it out right away and but it had water damage, or maybe it drifted away in the waves to be lost forever.
Either way, dropping your phone in water is probably one of the most annoying things that the majority of us experience at least once in our lives. It’s something that Ina Mansika had to deal with recently too—though her story has a slightly more arbitrary (and amazing) ending.
It all started when a Russian spy recently showed up in Norway—a beluga whale Russian spy that is. The whale, which kept popping up around fishermen boats, was suspected to have been trained by the Russian navy. After officials removed its harness, he still lingers around the waters near Hammerfest, where locals can try their best to see if they can say hi.
One of those visitors was Ina. Ina and and her friends took a trip to the waterfront to see if they could catch a glimpse of the remarkable creature—and ended up having something much more remarkable happen.
First off, they did wind up catching a glimpse of the beluga whale, so mission complete. Only problem was, Ina was so excited to see the whale that she accidentally flung her phone into the sea.
“We laid down on the dock to look at it and hopefully get the chance to pat it,” Mansika told The Dodo. “I had forgotten to close my jacket pocket and my phone fell in the ocean.”
Groan. So not only did she have no proof that she got to meet a Russian spy beluga whale (pretty good Instagram content, we’d say), the rest of her life in her phone was gone forever. How would she ever retrieve something so small from such a big body of water?
Luckily, she must have made a good impression on the beluga whale. The creature totally saved the day! He found her phone in the depths of the ocean and brought it back up to land in his mouth.
We’re serious. Watch the unexpected act of kindness here:
It was definitely not the turn of events people suspected.
“Everyone was so surprised. We almost didn’t believe what we saw,” Ina said. “I was super happy and thankful that I got my phone back.”
Of course, her phone didn’t work after being water logged, but that didn’t matter anymore—she was just so appreciative of what this whale had done for her. “I love animals! The whale is so kind,” she said.
Plus, she was still able to get a video of the whale retrieving her phone, which is much exciting than anything else she probably thought she’d capture that day!
Catherine Kinsman, co-founder of the Canadian Whale Stewardship Project said that the whale has “clearly been trained under the care of humans for a good long time.”
Can you believe this beluga whale brought this woman’s phone back to her? What would you have done if this happened to do you?
