The pandemic is not over, and masks are making a comeback. Why? Because of the delta variant.
While the original strain of Covid was about as contagious as the common cold, and yes, that’s pretty contagious, the delta variant is even more contagious. The CDC is saying the delta variant is as contagious as chicken pox.
People who have the common cold generally infect about 2 other people. That’s about the same as with the original strain of Covid-19. However, people who have chickenpox generally infect about 8 or 9 other people. That’s about the same as people who are infected with the delta variant.
While people who are vaccinated for Covid in most cases do not get as sick as people who are unvaccinated, if a vaccinated person gets infected with the delta variant of Covid, he or she will still most likely pass the virus on to 8 or 9 other people.
According to a new internal document at the CDC, “Vaccines prevent more than 90% of severe disease, but may be less effective at preventing infection or transmission. Therefore, more breakthrough and more community spread despite vaccination.”
CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky told The Washington Post, “It’s one of the most transmissible viruses we know about. Measles, chickenpox, this — they’re all up there.” She added, “The measures we need to get this under control — they’re extreme. The measures you need are extreme.”
The document states, “the war has changed.” It recommends vaccine mandates and mask mandates.
