If you haven’t heard by now, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have just given birth to their new royal cutie, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, and everyone couldn’t be happier about it.
Except one party pooper. BBC radio broadcaster Danny Baker thought it would be amusing to post something inappropriate on his Twitter feed about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s baby, but it backfired on him in the biggest way.
After his tweet went viral, Baker was let go from his job.
How bad was the post? You can make your own decision about it: In his post, Baker tweeted a black and white photo of a man and woman holding hands with a chimpanzee in a suit and a top hat, with the caption that read, “Royal baby leaves hospital.”
People immediately swarmed to Baker’s page, accusing him of being racist, but Baker swears that wasn’t what he meant by the tweet at all.
Baker claims that the tweet was “supposed to be a joke about Royals vs. circus animals in posh clothes but interpreted as about monkeys & race, so rightly deleted. Royal watching not my forte,” and that he made an “enormous mistake.” He had since deleted the message.
But it was too late for deletions and apologies at that point—BBC canned him from the company.
“This was a serious error of judgment and goes against the values we as a station aim to embody,” a BBC spokesperson said. “Danny’s a brilliant broadcaster but will no longer be presenting a weekly show with us.”
Baker was not exactly thrilled about this, or apologetic at that point. He responded the decision, saying that his unemployment is a “masterclass in pompous faux-gravity” and that the BBC “literally threw me under the bus.”
