It seems that it’s just one piece of bad news after another in 2020. What started off as a hopeful year full of opportunities and the potential for fun has become a year in which we pretty much expect things to go wrong. Our expectations are so low that we hardly even blink when we hear more bad news.
School (in-person and distance-learning) being a lot different than previous years? Yeah, we expected it. People getting sick at Starbucks? What else is new. An asteroid hurtling towards Earth? But, of course.
Wait. Want us to back up for that one? Yes, you heard right, there is an asteroid headed towards Earth, and it’s supposed to pass by us the day before election day. Perfect. Timing.
Before you panic, read on. It’s almost impossible that this asteroid will do any damage at all to our planet. It will not be the end of the world.
The asteroid in question is known as 2018VP1, and it is only 6.5 feet long. In a statement, NASA said, “Asteroid 2018VP1 is very small, approximately 6.5 feet, and poses no threat to Earth. If it were to enter our planet’s atmosphere, it would disintegrate due to its extremely small size.

According to data, there is only a .41% chance that the asteroid will even hit the earth’s atmosphere, but if it does, it is supposedly too small to do any damage and will simply disintegrate.
While you may think this asteroid is another weird surprise of 2020, it is not a surprise to scientists. Look at the name of the asteroid: 2018VP1. The first part of the name, 2018, indicates the year in which the asteroid was discovered. Scientists have been studying and tracking this asteroid for 2 years. It has actually been long-awaited.
Does it surprise you that an asteroid is headed towards Earth?
