If you’re an avid Jeopardy watcher, you’ve probably been feeling a little emotional during the episodes lately since Alex Trebek’s stage four pancreatic cancer diagnosis came out.
The beloved longtime host of the classic show has kept a positive outlook since learning the heartbreaking news in March 2019, even though his prognosis isn’t looking the most promising (sadly just 3 percent of patients survive for five years or longer, research shows). Fans everywhere can’t help but tune in while also consequently saying a prayer.
But it was the latest episode of the show that really got everyone choked up—even Trebek, who’s known for being well put together.
It was during the final Jeopardy question when contestant Dhruv Gaur shared his answer. As always, Trebek read the answer out loud, but when he realized what was written on the board, he had to choke back some tears that filled his eyes.
Gaur had completely ignored the question at hand, writing “What is we love you Alex!” sacrificing $1,995 of his $2,000 total.
“That’s very kind of you, thank you,” Trebek said with his voice trembling. “Costs you $1,995.”
Is someone chopping onions?
To show his support of pancreatic cancer research, Gaur was also wearing a purple ribbon during the show.
What’s more, The “Tournament of Champions,” of which Gaur is a part of, is currently organizing a campaign to raise money for pancreatic cancer research. They’re asking that anyone who watches the upcoming Jeopardy episodes on November 14 and 15 to donate $1 for each correct answer given.
The bittersweet moment between Trebek and Gaur is honestly one of the most touching we’ve ever seen. If you missed it on Monday’s episode, check out the video below.
