After seeing a few episodes of Britain’s Got Talent, you know what to expect out of the hopeful contestants; they’re usually nervous, young, and have big voices that make the audience hoot and holler. Often, they’re young kids who take us aback with their incredible voices. But never have we seen something like this on the long-running show.
When Janey Cutler walked onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage, we have to admit, we didn’t know what to expect. Janey is an 80-year-old great-grandma from Glasgow, with seven kids, dozens of grand and great-grand kids, and a wonderful life behind her.
But Janey has so much more in front of her, as well.
Impressed with her amazing voice for years, Janey’s friends finally convinced her that she had nothing to lose by auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent. She finally listened and decided to go for it.
Backstage, Janey is absolutely adorable, telling the hosts about her family and joking about how she’ll be “trying to sing out there.” No surprise here, she does a whole lot more than try.
When it’s her turn to go out and perform for the judges, the hosts try to point to the white spot on the stage where she’s meant to sing. She can’t quite see where they’re referring to, so they offer to walk her out themselves! So adorable.
The judges, Simon in particular, are cracking up as sweet Janey is brought out on stage. You can tell, however, that they’re all wondering how this is going to go over, as I’m sure we’re all thinking.
She goes on to have the sweetest conversation with Simon – she is such a sweet woman! Not only is she kind (and so darn cute) she’s honest, too; when Simon asks her why she’s auditioning, she had one of the most honest answers we’ve ever heard on the show.
“Well, I like singing so…my friends say go for it,” Janey says truthfully to the judges.
Then, she begins to sing her selected number, “No Regrets.” And the moment she begins to sing, the crowd swells with applause and cheers.
It’s clear why. Janey has this big voice, with an operatic vibrato, and a gorgeous crooning tone to her voice. She is incredible, belting high notes through key changes and making the crowd jump to their feet by the big finish at the end of her impressive number.
Even the judges are giving her a standing ovation!
Judging by the tumultuous response from the audience and the grins on the judges faces, it’s no surprise that they all three gave Janey a “yes,” sending her to the next round of the competition. Humble and grinning, Janey waves and kisses as the adoring crowd, telling the judges she’s just grateful to be there.
What an amazing woman! She’s honest, tough, kind, and extremely talented. It warms your heart to see her actually pursuing her passion, no matter her age! Better late than never, as Janey says.
