On Monday, Whoopi Goldberg made comments on “The View” that got the attention of ABC staff members, and not in a good way. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources claim texts between staff members at ABC started flying, and many felt that something needed to be done.
The offensive comments that Goldberg made were about the Holocaust. She was discussing the fact that a school board in Tennessee decided to ban the graphic novel “Maus,” which is about the Holocaust. While discussing the school board’s decision, she said, “If you’re going to do this, then let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race.”
Goldberg was insistent that the Holocaust was not about race but instead about “man’s inhumanity to man.” She felt that it couldn’t have been about race because the Nazis and the Jews were both white.
Later that day, Goldberg talked to Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti-Defamation League who corrected her logic. He explained that the Nazis viewed the Jewish people as an inferior race, and they were trying to eliminate them.
On Monday night, Goldberg apologized. On Twitter, she wrote, “I stand corrected. The Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never waiver. I’m sorry for the hurt I have caused.”
An apology wasn’t enough for ABC News President Kim Godwin. In a statement, Godwin explained, “Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments. While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities.”
