Excited for the 3-day weekend on the way? Memorial Day is a great time to celebrate the unofficial start of summer, and usually a whole slew of deals come along on that weekend as well. But not every sale will be worth your while. Take a look at some sound advice from DealNews on what to expect from Memorial Day Sales this year.
Fill Your Closet with Memorial Day Clothing Steals
Memorial Day, especially this year, is a great time to stock up on spring apparel. Here’s why:
Our recent bout of protracted winter has left a lot of spring clothing on the shelves, as retailers struggled to keep up with the unusual demand for more cold-weather gear. As a result, since early April we’ve seen tons of clearance sales, with retailers trying to get rid of their spring stock in time for the arrival of summer styles. As such, Memorial Day is certain to offer spring clearance blowouts, with stacking coupons offering the steepest discounts we’ve seen since January.
DealNews suspects that we’ll see apparel deals of up to 80% off on average. And by stacking coupons, you can take an extra 15% to 40% at stores like Kohl’s, Macy’s and JC Penney. If you’d rather avoid the crowds at the stores, just check out the sales online the also offer free shipping.
Skip Summer Seasonal Items
Even though the warm weather may have you in the mood to buy a grill and some great patio furniture for your outdoor space, Memorial Day is not the time to grab the best deal. According to DealNews, the best time to buy a grill in the near future would be in June or July. And patio furniture won’t likely start being discounted until August.
However, home goods can be great buys during Memorial Day weekend:
Last year, we saw select tool brands marked up to 50% off at Lowe’s and Home Depot, knocking some hand tools down to just $5 each. Meanwhile, Sears took up to 30% off select appliances during its Memorial Day sale last year, and many items were eligible for up to an additional $40 off via stacking coupons. For example, during that Sears sale we saw a Dyson vacuum price low that wasn’t beaten for another five months.
Grab the Apple Pie, Not the Apple Products
If you are in the market for a new MacBook Air, you’ll want to hold your horses until after Memorial Day:
Memorial Day weekend is definitely not the time to buy an Apple product, because the company’s annual WWDC conference is just around the corner. We predicted that the 2013 MacBook Air could drop as low as $750 after the conference in early June.
