Vegan Takes Neighbor to Court Over the Smell of Meat Wafting Over from Their BBQ

Picture this scene: You decide one day you want to throw some steaks on the barbecue and then next thing you know, you’re getting cuffed up with handcuffs and taken to jail.

Okay so the situation all over the news didn’t quite go that way, but it may as well have! One woman who’s vegan—meaning she doesn’t consume any animal products—recently brought her neighbor to court because the smell of his barbecue-ing meat in his yard wafting over to hers was too much for her vegan heart to bear.

“It’s been devastating, it’s been turmoil, it’s been unrest, I haven’t been able to sleep,” the woman, Cilla Carden, stated.

Now, we understand that this woman clearly hates animal products. And perhaps the smell of grilling meat was truly awful for her to experience. But this seems a little…intense, no?

After the court date, Carden, of course, had the case dismissed by the judge. He noted that the documents she submitted were “well in excess of anything that might be thought to be proportionate to the issues,” and that “the volume of material that she has produced also suggests that these matters have to an extent become somewhat overwhelming.”

But it doesn’t end there. The neighbor who got brought to court, Toan Vu, along with his wife and their children, attracted a lot of attention, especially by a man named Bailey Mason, who calls himself the “Warrior of Animals.” He wanted to help out the Vu family, and decided to get back at Carden for all the trouble she had caused.

Mason decide to post an event to Facebook to plan a protest outside of Carden’s home—which of course involves having one, huge barbecue.

And after sharing the news, he was right: the anger grew even further. The Facebook event has more than 16,000 people who have marked themselves as either going or being interested in attending the event.

The Facebook event page reads:

“Cilla Carden has a problem with her neighbours cooking meat on their BBQ, because she’s a vegan. Recently taking them to the Supreme Court! Don’t let Cilla destroy a good old Aussie tradition, join us for a community BBQ in protest of her actions, and help Cilla Carden GET SOME PORK ON HER FORK. BYO hotdog buns, p.s. NO VEGANS.”

The event is being held on October 19, 2019 near Carden’s residence in Australia. Pretty clever, eh? Carden doesn’t think so. In fact, she’s already gotten her lawyer involved to ensure they don’t go ahead with it.

“Any person who seeks to attend Ms Carden’s property on Saturday, October 19, 2019, or at any other time in relation to this event or matter will be referred to the WA police on the grounds of trespass,” her lawyer, John Hammond, said.

We wonder what will happen! What would you do if someone took you to court due to over-wafting of barbecued meat smells? Have you ever heard of something so ridiculous? If you lived in Australia, would you attend the community BBQ to get back at this woman?
