Nothing magical happened when the clock struck midnight and 2020 changed to 2021 on New Year’s Eve. While this year may not be getting off to an epic start for everyone, if you’re a gymnast at UCLA, the year couldn’t be better.

UCLA recently opened the gymnastics season by competing with Arizona State, and UCLA was victorious. More than that, one of their students’ floor routines is going viral.

Gymnast Nia Dennis caught the world’s attention in 2020 when her amazing floor routine went viral. The routine, which was set to Beyoncé music, earned her a score of 9.975.

This season, Dennis’s floor routine did not disappoint. She earned a score of 9.950 with a routine set to music by all black musicians including Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Megan Thee Stallion, Missy Elliott, Soulja Boy, and Tupac Shakur.

UCLA shared a video of the floor routine on Twitter along with the text “This is what #blackexcellence looks like. @DennisNia does it again!”

The video has already been retweeted more than 17,000 times and many notable people have commented on it including gold medal winning Olympic gymnast Simone Biles who wrote, “okay @DennisNia do the damn thing girl ? this was so fun to watch! keep killing it!”

Ready to see the routine for yourself? Watch it below.

Did you notice Dennis’s teammates dancing along with her on the sidelines? We love this team spirit and this incredible gymnast.

In an interview for the Los Angeles Daily News, Dennis said, “This routine definitely reflects everything that I am today as a woman, and of course I had to incorporate a lot of parts of my culture. I wanted to have a dance party because that’s my personality and of course I had to shout out LA because we out here, UCLA.”

Dennis is a Senior at UCLA. According to a short bio about her, she is originally from Columbus, Ohio. When she’s not competing in gymnastics, she’s working on her sociology major and hopes to one day become a physical therapist.

We’re sure she’s going to go on to do great things after graduation, but we’re looking forward to seeing her continue to compete and blow away the competition.

Even people who don’t follow gymnastics know that Dennis is one to watch. One viewer commented, “I don’t follow gymnastics except for during the Olympics, but this young lady just had the coldest for routine I’ve ever seen! Absolutely amazing.”

Another viewer pointed out, “The fact that she can show that much personality and then jump in to focus and stick that landing is insane.”

What was your favorite part of this amazing routine? What did you like better, Dennis’s routine from 2020 or her new routine for 2021?
