Have you ever heard of jicama? It’s a vegetable that kind of looks like a combination between a potato and a turnip. And though it may seem intimidating if you’ve never worked with it before, it’s completely delicious. Usually enjoyed raw, this sweet, juicy veggie has a white flesh that’s got a nice crunch to it. And as The Kitchn points out, it’s kind of like a “savory apple.”
You can pick up this veggie at most local grocery stores if you want to give it a try. And once you do get them, make sure you take The Kitchn’s preparation advice:
Yes, you need to peel a jicama’s thick, papery skin, but please do not peel jicama skin with a vegetable peeler! A chef’s knife will give you much better (and safer) results.
Cut a thin slice from the top and bottom of the jicama to create a flat surface on each end. Rest the jicama on its broadest cut end. Working from top to bottom and following the curve of the jicama, slide your knife under the skin to peel it. You can use a vegetable peeler to peel any tough, fibrous underlying flesh that remains.
Then once you slice it, the possibilities are endless. Here are just a few great things you can try with jicama:
Make Jicama Fries
Dice It and Make a Salsa
Combine diced jicama with the usual salsa suspects (diced tomato, corn, black beans, cilantro, avocado, etc.) Finish with lime juice and you’ve got a tasty, slightly crunchy salsa to eat with tortilla chips.
Replace Carrot Sticks
Cut jicama into sticks and dip into your favorite hummus!
Make Cole Slow
Cut your jicama into thin strips to add to a slaw.
Toss It in a Stir Fry
Toss this in with broccoli, garlic, ginger, scallions and sesame seeds. If you stir fry jicama briefly, you’ll add a great, refreshing crunch to your dish.
