Seal Slaps Kayaker in the Face With an Octopus — Yes, You Read That Right

Are you having an all-around cruddy day today? Were you late to work this morning because you accidentally pressed the ‘off’ button instead of the ‘snooze’? Did you forget to pack your kids’ lunch? Perhaps, you have an uber-important meeting this morning and, in a mad dash to get out of the house, set yourself up for a serious wardrobe malfunction.

Yep, those sound like things that, when added together, could constitute a pretty horrible day. But, and this is a big BUT, at least you weren’t slapped in the face with an octopus…by a seal.

That would make your day go from “bad” to “worse,” huh?

Well, that very slap happened to a kayaker in Kaikoura, New Zealand this past week, while he was minding his own business, paddling through a herd of feasting seals. Apparently, one of the seals wasn’t happy about the kayaker interrupting food fest, so the animal did what he could with the resources that he had at the time–he chucked an octopus VIOLENTLY into the kayaker’s noggin.

Luckily, this entire incident was caught on video (thank God for GoPros!) and, we have to say, it is absolutely one of the most shocking viral videos we’ve seen in a while. It’s hard to describe with just how much power that seal hurls the eight-legged creature– but let’s just say it’s something you have to see to believe.

To catch this piece of seal-on-human violence for yourself, be sure to watch the video below. We don’t know about you, but we are really feeling bad for that octopus right about now!

We can’t wait to hear your take on this crazy nature video. Were you surprised that a seal would do this? Do you think it was trying to fend off the kayaker? Do you have any crazy nature encounters of your own that you would like to share?
