Live television broadcasts aren’t always smooth sailing, and audiences sometimes get an eyeful of an entertaining, dangerous, embarrassing, or cringeworthy moment. In this case, brace your ears.
Get ready to clutch your pearls in the name of all that is uncouth because one of America’s television personalities has committed an on-air faux pas. And it’s hilarious.
NBC’s Savannah Guthrie was heard dropping the s-bomb on live TV during a Today show break. Yup. But it seems she was unaware that the cameras were rolling. It also looked like she didn’t know her mic was on either, as she was glancing down at papers and when she uttered the word to herself.
Naturally, the censor crew didn’t catch it in time but they quickly turned down the sound right after that before switching to a commercial break. Many viewers caught it however, and were quite enthusiastic about posting their amused reactions on social media.
One Twitter user jokingly asked, “Do you kiss your momma with that mouth?” Another posted, “You are awesome! Even with a potty mouth!” And of course, lots of poop emojis littered the comments section as people cracked up.
Shortly after the gaffe, Guthrie issued an apology through her Twitter account:
“Check, check – is this thing on? Yeah I guess it is.
So sorry guys. Thanks for being kind and understanding. And guess it’s good thing I don’t wear a mic all day. #ohdarn”
No worries! People were very understanding of her having a human moment, even if it was on live TV. It wouldn’t be the first time she slipped up while on-air. Last year, she made a small Freudian slip when discussing her time out on maternity leave, and mistakenly confused her husband’s name for Matt Lauer (look that one up).
And this little hiccup wouldn’t be the first one committed during a news broadcast. Remember the kids who crashed their dad’s TV interview with BBC about foreign policy? How about the news team who couldn’t stomach their co-worker’s holiday dip during a segment?
While Savannah may have ruffled some feathers with her language, there have been others who have dropped a less acceptable f-bomb while on camera. A few years ago, one news anchor got canned after dropping a double cursing whammy, combining two bad words during a live broadcast.
A.J. Clemente was fired after just one day on his new job, but his cussing went viral and had him making the talk show rounds. Guthrie isn’t facing the same punishment for her accidental blunder, so maybe they just had the vet slip a dollar into the swear jar.
Surely, you’ve been in a situation where you said a bad word or two when you thought no one was watching. This should be relatable! Watch this video to hear it for yourself and the damage control measures that soon followed. It is quite entertaining!
Did you see Savannah’s moment when it happened live? Have you ever had a similar moment where you let one slip? Are you laughing at this too?
