With many people living in cities and with so many television shows geared towards children, kids don’t always run around and play outside anymore like we did when we were growing up.

The royal family, particularly Kate Middleton, feels that it is very important for children to enjoy nature. She said, “I believe that spending time outdoors when we are young can play a role in laying the foundations for children to become happy, healthy adults.”

As a mom with three young children (Prince George who is 5 years old, Princess Charlotte who is 4 years old, and Prince Louise who is 1 year old), it is no surprise that children and their wellbeing is hugely important for her. Kate isn’t just concerned about her own children though. She wants to encourage the children of London to play outside too.

The Duchess has been working on a passion project. It’s an interactive garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. She helped design the garden, and her children even helped decorate it by gathering items like moss and sticks for their mom to use in the garden.

Once the garden was complete, Kate, Prince William, and their three children explored the garden together. The children loved trying out the interactive items like a rope swing and a tree house. In fact, even Kate and William gave the rope swing a try.

The very next day, Kate gave a personal tour of the garden to her grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II. It turns out that the Queen loves gardening, and Kate turned to the Queen for advice while she was creating the garden. We’re sure it was exciting for them both to see it completed.

Kate and Queen Elizabeth II both wore floral dresses during the tour of the garden, which is certainly fitting. Prince William toured the garden with them, but he stuck with a classic suit and tie.

Kate and William posted several pictures of the garden on their official Instagram account, kensingtonroyal. The post describes the garden as a “woodland wilderness.” The text goes on to read,

The garden is aiming to inspire interaction with the natural environment through its multi-sensory, green and blue plant scheme. The garden will be filled with incredible edibles, plants for craft activities, forest scents and a diverse range of plants, shrubs and trees of different heights and textures.
