It’s fall y’all! Pumpkins, autumn leaves, and cinnamon brooms take over stores and homes. It’s always cool to see different-sized pumpkins and other squash taking center stage during October and November. Sure, you can carve pumpkins up into jack o’ lanterns, but there are many ways to use them!
Pumpkins are ridiculously versatile and can give you the opportunity to become uber creative. Cook ‘em, carve ‘em, and decorate ‘em until your heart’s content. As far as fall décor goes, artful pumpkin projects can take over your indoor and outdoor landscape. Some people go all out with lace, carvings, or decoupage, but this project sponsored by Pro Flowers can make your holiday tables pop.
Blogger Jennifer Priest outlines the steps to create beautiful flower-filled pumpkin centerpieces for your autumn gatherings. These are easy to make and only require a keen eye for the right size pumpkin and colorful flower bouquets.
Pumpkin Flower Centerpieces
Supplies
- Bowl
- Pumpkin
- Knife
- Spoon
- Vase (about 2 – 3 inches shorter than the pumpkin’s height)
- Bouquet of flowers
- Sheet moss
Instructions
-
Trace
Use the mouth of the vase to trace an opening onto the top of the pumpkin.
-
Cut
Cut the traced section of the pumpkin out with the knife. Save the sawed-out pumpkin cap on the side.
-
Scoop
Take your spoon and scoop out the guts of the pumpkin, then discard them into a bowl.
-
Trim
Trim the stem of the pumpkin lid so that it’s flat. Place it into the bottom of the hollowed out pumpkin. If it is unable to fit, cut around the edges just enough for it to fit.
-
Stand
Stand the vase inside of the pumpkin, on top of the lid.
-
Add Water
Add the flower food and water to the vase.
-
Clip
Clip the ends of the flowers with enough height to extend beyond the pumpkin’s edges. Place them in the vase. Arrange your bouquet, taking special consideration of extra space. Fill in any extra space and cover any pumpkin edges with sheet moss.
Make more than one of these centerpieces for your decorative Thanksgiving displays. Pay attention to the size of the pumpkins in contrast with the height of the vases. You can also take it a step further by decorating the outside of the pumpkin. Painting or carving the outer shell can add an extra touch of swag to your pumpkin. Use rich metallic colors like gold or simply paint your pumpkins to match the rest of your table décor.
You can also accent your centerpieces by wrapping faux floral or berry vines around the bottoms, tying ribbon on the pumpkins, or surrounding them with votive candles. Tiny string lights can be woven through vines or other decorations. Rather than setting them square in the middle of your table, another idea is to display your pumpkin pieces on a stand of some sort. Cake plates, baskets, or trays would do nicely to add a bit of elegance!
With holiday gathering season coming upon us, these centerpieces are perfect for parties, weddings, or other special occasions. They also make great parting gifts after the party’s over. What do you think of this seasonal centerpiece? How do you decorate with pumpkins? Tell us in the comments!
