It seems that Prince William and Prince Harry‘s relationship has been on shaky ground for years. According to historian Robert Lacey, the dispute has largely been about Prince Harry’s relationship with Meghan Markle.
Lacey wrote the book “Battle of Brothers: The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult,” and he recently updated the manuscript by adding chapters with new information.
According to Lacey, Prince William never approved of how quickly Prince Harry’s relationship with Meghan Markle moved. It was quite a bit different than the many years of courtship between Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton. Lacey wrote, “William worried that his brother was moving too fast in his courtship – and he did not shrink from saying as much when Harry started talking about getting hitched to Meghan quite soon.”
Lacey explained that the two princes seemed to be on good terms again leading up to the wedding, but after Meghan officially became part of the royal family, tension increased again.
Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding was in May 2018. Jump to October 2018, and Prince William found out that some of the royal staff accused Meghan of bullying. He definitely didn’t ignore these claims. Instead, he called his brother on the phone. The call didn’t go well.
According to Lacey, the phone call turned into a “fierce and bitter” argument. Lacey wrote, “When Harry flared up in furious defense of his wife, the elder brother persisted. Harry shut off his phone angrily, so William went to speak to him personally. The prince was horrified by what he had just been told about Meghan’s alleged behavior, and he wanted to hear what Harry had to say. The showdown between the brothers was fierce and bitter.”
After this argument, Prince William no longer wanted his brother to share his office or household. A friend told Lacey that “William threw Harry out.”
According to Lacey, William wasn’t the only one who didn’t like the new Duchess. Kate Middleton was “wary” of Meghan Markle. Meanwhile, William was suspicious that she had an “agenda.”
Lacey explained, “Both brothers have been damaged by their upbringings; both have reacted by finding different solutions. There is so much pain and trauma in this story, going right back to the beginning.”
Prince William and Prince Harry will be reunited on July 1, 2021, when they come together to reveal a new statue in honor of their late mother, Princess Diana. July 1 would have been her 60th birthday.
Do you think the brothers will ever be on good terms again? Do you believe the bullying claims?
