When you’re a member of the royal family, it’s only natural that your privacy is going to be a little more violated than others. You know, what you ate for breakfast or your afternoon tea date might be the talk of the town after it’s published in a tabloid the very next day.
Even though they’re small details, it still doesn’t make it right. After all, how would you like it if everyone knew everything about your life simply because you’re in the public eye?
It gets even worse when the details of your life are extremely personal. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, know they can’t do too much about the silly little stories published about them, but recently tabloids The Sun and Daily Mirror took things a little too far, and Prince Harry couldn’t sit back and watch it happen.
The tabloids published a letter that Markle privately wrote to her father. It was a letter that the two do not believe could’ve been published without legal consent. They’re also unhappy about the fact that the factualness of the article got completely skewed.
“The contents of a private letter were published unlawfully in an intentionally destructive manner to manipulate…the reader, and further the divisive agenda of the media group in question,” Prince Harry said. “They purposely misled you by strategically omitting select paragraphs, specific sentences, and even singular words to mask the lies they had perpetuated for over a year.”
The article concerned a letter Meghan had written to her estranged father. The two royals are suing the presses for the misuse of private information, infringement of copyright and breach of the Data Protection Act 2018.
The published letter was the last straw for Prince Harry, especially after Markle had been attacked via tabloids when she was pregnant and now as a new mother.
“Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences – a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son,” Prince Harry wrote in a statement. “I have been a silent witness to her private suffering for too long. To stand back and do nothing would be contrary to everything we believe in.”
It’s obvious why Prince Harry feels as strongly as he does. He compared how the media was treating his wife to how the media treated his mother when she died in a car crash in 1997 while trying to get away from the paparazzi.
“My deepest fear is history repeating itself. I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person,” he continued. “I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”
Unfortunately, the tabloids aren’t cooperating, nor apologizing for their actions, and claim what they did was completely lawful. To hear their statement back, as well as hear more on the issue, check out the video below.
