Every once in a while, we come across a good deed that is so sweet, we can’t help but share the news with you right away! Today’s story is the perfect example of this sentiment— seriously, you guys, get ready for some potent “warm and fuzzies.”
But, before we get too ahead of ourselves, let’s first get more details on why this heartwarming story of a police officer going above beyond his call of duty affected so many people…
It all started last week, went the Montoursville Borough Police Department in Montoursville, Pennsylvania shared a photo to their public Facebook page. The photo (shown above) doesn’t look like much at first glance — just a shot of a police officer steadying an elderly man — but when you hear the backstory, you’ll truly be amazed.
You see, the elderly man was forced to call 911 after he found his wife unresponsive. According to information in the police department’s post, the woman did not have a pulse and was in full cardiac arrest. When the first responders came, the husband of the woman explained that he wanted to go with his wife to the hospital, but that he was unable to drive himself because he had recently undergone hip surgery. Apparently, the 84-year-old didn’t want to risk other people’s lives by getting behind the wheel.
When he told Chief Jeffrey Gyurina about his dilemma, the responding officer wrote down his patrol cell phone number, a line that is given to police officers who are currently on duty. The man called that number and a few hours later, Deputy Chief Jason Bentley arrived to drive him to the hospital.
Once they arrived, Bentley got out of the car and escorted the elderly man by the arm into UPMC Susquehanna’s emergency room. That’s when someone snapped a picture of the good deed in action. Although we can’t see either one of their faces in the shot, we can only assume that the man is at least partially relieved to have gotten one step closer to his ailing wife.
When Bentley was done getting him safely inside, attentive hospitable staff provided a wheelchair for the man and brought him to his wife so that he could be by her side. It’s a beautiful story, but it’s also one that, according to the police department, happens regularly, right under our noses.
In the statement, Chief Gyruina was quick to point out that “most police do this kind of thing day in and day out.” Just another reason why we love our men and women in blue!
