Plus-Sized Dancer Challenges Our Preconceptions About What a Dancer Should Look Like

It’s hard enough for a female to walk in high heels, let alone dance in them. So what if we told you that a man, who isn’t traditionally physically built to dance, can perform some pretty perfect moves wearing a pair of stilettos?

Meet Erik Cavanaugh, the 25-year-old plus size male who’s putting dancing stereotypes to shame. The dancer filmed himself one day dancing flawlessly in four-inch heels. There are splits. There are twists and turns and a bunch of other impressive moves that has left us speechless.

It’s left others speechless as well. His performance was so amazing that he posted the video in April, and just four months later, it had racked up nearly 70 million views for how brilliant it was.

For some background, Cavanaugh has always loved dance. In fact, he’s been studying the skill at Pittsburgh CAPA and majoring in dance at Slippery Rock University.

For the video, he was just practicing his moves at a local dance studio when he decided to film himself doing so. He really didn’t expect much to come from it.

“I thought, ‘OK, this might get some views,’” Cavanaugh said. “I didn’t think it would get 60 million. It’s not like a mommy-type thing.”

Well, it wasn’t then. But it certainly turned into one. Since the video was released, Cavanaugh has since starred in two music videos, been in Oprah Magazine and even had a brief stint on “America’s Got Talent.” Impressive!

“I’m very proud of him for really pursuing what he loves to do, and finding his own path that maybe doesn’t fit into everybody else’s mode,” said Cavanaugh’s dance teacher at CAPA and chair of the dance department, Rene Polanco. “He’s forging ahead and not letting anything stop him.”

“The way he moves is just very fluid — it gives you a sense of pleasure as you’re watching that,” she added. “When he did his senior solo it was that same quality of movement.”

Besides being obviously talented, people were drawn most to Cavanaugh not being the conventional dancer. The video is actually what started the use of the hashtag #dancerscomeinallsizes. They sure do!

But what prompted Mr. Cavanaugh to put on heels and bust a move? It tuens out he found himself completely enraptured and inspired by videos of French dancer Yanis Marshall.

Dancing in heels challenges Cavanaugh to take his twirling to the next level, and he looks amazing doing it. In fact, he continues to blow us away—the original video showed him dancing in four-inch heels, but he says he’s since upgraded to 6.5-inch heels.

We can barely WALK in 6.5-inch heels, let alone dance in them!

Cavanaugh is now a full-time dancer, training 2-3 hours every day. He earns a living through participating in commercial and music videos, licensing his own dance videos and teaching dance classes.
